Partisan politics in Congress  have blocked common sense gun reform legislation from being voted on the House Floor. My colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus and others have led the effort to demand a vote for passage of sensible legislation to protect Americans. The Congressional Black Caucus, often hailed as the conscience of the Congress, led a sit-in on the House Floor to demand a vote from House leadership on "No Fly, No Buy"legislation and has brought both topics of gun violence and community policing to the forefront of the national discussion with events like "Lighting the Way" National Speak Out held on July,14 at the U.S. Capitol.

Americans across the country are seeking answers for  how we can heal and come together in light of our perceived differences. Communities around the nation are engaged, more than ever, in having an open and honest discussion about gun safety reform, gun violence, and community policing in their neighborhoods. In July, I hosted our first community forum  in the series of Safer12th events in Winston-Salem, NC. We must continue to push for collaboration among civic and community leaders across the 12th District and the country so that every citizen is empowered to take a stance against gun violence and also feels a sense of comfort knowing that police officers in our community are here to serve and protect them.

There was a full house at the Safer12th Panel held in Winston Salem in July. Congresswoman Adams was joined on the panel by community leaders and Police Chief Barry Roundtree.

During the sit-in Congresswoman Adams and her colleagues held the House floor for 26 hours to urge Republican leadership to bring common sense gun reform bills to the floor for a vote.

 

One month after the tragic shooting of 49 innocent victims in a nightclub in Orlando Congresswoman Adams and her colleagues remember the victims. Congress must pass common sense legislation to disarm hate and create real gun violence reforms in our nation.

The Public Safety and Wildlife Protection Act (H.R. 5530) was introduced in conjunction with Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY) to prohibit interstate shipment of leghold and Conibear traps. 

Reauthorization of the Career and Technical Education Act (CTE) passed the House Education and the Workforce Committee.
Reauthorization of the CTE will serve as an important next step in modernizing jobs training and addressing the skills gap between job seekers and employers.
